Syracuse University is seeking a highly accomplished, dynamic, and visionary leader to serve as Department Chair of the Department of Exercise Science in the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. The successful candidate will possess an impressive record of scholarship, as well as undergraduate teaching and graduate mentorship for an appointment at the rank of full Professor. We encourage creative, dynamic, and passionate candidates with an earned doctorate in exercise science, kinesiology, or a related area to apply. Preference will be given to candidates with post-doctoral training and a strong research agenda as supported by peer-reviewed publications and federal and/or major foundation grant funding. All areas of expertise within the general field of exercise science will be considered. A collaborative multi-disciplinary approach to research that transects faculty interests in exercise/physical activity, applied physiology, chronic disease and/or disability is desirable. The ideal candidate must also demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching, student mentoring/advising, and professional service.
The Department of Exercise Science comprises an interdisciplinary faculty with expertise in the broad areas of physical activity measurement, exercise endocrinology, muscle biology, cardiovascular exercise physiology, genetics, respiratory physiology, and environmental physiology. Our faculty are also active members of campus-wide research groups such as the Neuroscience Program, Aging Studies Institute, Burton Blatt Institute on Disability, and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families. Current research funding comes from the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, American College of Sports Medicine, American Heart Association, The Robert E. Leet and Clara Guthrie Patterson Trust, and a variety of other foundation and industry collaborators.
The Department of Exercise Science currently has one teaching lab, and 5 research labs aligned with faculty expertise, and maintains strong clinical and basic research collaborations with investigators around campus in chemistry, biology, psychology, nutrition, public health, and at neighboring hospitals (SUNY Upstate Medical University, Joslin Diabetes Center).
The department houses one of the largest undergraduate programs in Falk College with approximately 300 Health & Exercise Science students. While small, our doctoral program was previously ranked among the top 25 programs in the nation by the National Academy of Kinesiology. Our doctoral students have been uniformly successful in gaining post-doc and faculty-line opportunities post-graduation. The department aspires to grow our graduate programs in particular and seeks a leader who will work to leverage opportunities within the sport and health focus of the college and the university.
The Chair will be responsible for the department’s academic and strategic leadership and provide public advocacy for the department at the university, regional, and national levels. The Chair will provide daily oversight of a department housed in an R1 research university that offers BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. The Chair will have the following responsibilities: maintaining regular meeting schedules with faculty and staff and being available for faculty/staff support and assistance; overseeing and supporting recruitment efforts at both the undergraduate and graduate levels; overseeing the promotion and tenure processes for the department as well as faculty and staff annual reviews: offer student support and assistance as needed; oversee curriculum design, advising, operations, budget, and day-to-day management; and will teach according to department needs and in the successful candidate’s area of expertise.
