Job Summary The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce searches for eight (8) new tenure-track faculty members as part of a strategic hiring initiative targeting several emerging and multidisciplinary themes. A major component of this hiring initiative includes the request for applications and nominations for a faculty position at the level of Professor or Associate Professor in the cross-cutting area of exercise and oncology. After successfully filling this senior-level position, the School of Kinesiology is committed to hiring two additional tenure-line junior faculty positions in this same theme of exercise and oncology. The University of Michigan is one of the highest ranked public universities in the nation and one of the world’s preeminent research institutions. The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan is one of 19 independent academic units and one of seven health science schools and colleges within the University of Michigan. In Fall 2020, the National Academy of Kinesiology ranked the School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan as the #1 Kinesiology program in the US. The School is led by a Dean (Dean Lori Ploutz-Snyder), has 31 tenure-line faculty and approximately 1000 students. The School is home to one of the country’s top programs focusing on the interdisciplinary study of exercise and movement in humans and animal models. In addition to the many exciting opportunities within the School of Kinesiology, the School has a strong record of successful partnering with other academic units within the University - consistent with the culture of the University of Michigan that highly values innovation across disciplines. Support from the University of Michigan’s Rogel Cancer Center for this open faculty position provides an outstanding example of cross-campus collaboration. The Rogel Cancer Center has a distinguished history of scientific excellence, collaboration and impact in basic science, clinical research and cancer control research. The Cancer Center also offers many training programs for the faculty’s students and trainees. Many other training grants and student funding opportunities at the University of Michigan are also available to help support trainees. Candidates for this open faculty position will be expected to maintain a robust, ongoing research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and have research expertise appropriate for the effective mentoring of trainees at the undergraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels. Successful candidates will be expected to maintain extramural funding for an active research program at the University of Michigan. The individual hired into this new faculty position will be based in the School of Kinesiology. In Winter 2021, the School of Kinesiology will be moving into a newly renovated, state-of-the-art academic and research building (Kinesiology Building), which is located in the heart of the University of Michigan’s main campus. The $120,000,000 renovation project will expand the School of Kinesiology’s research, classroom, and office space to approximately 250,000 sq ft. The research space in this newly renovated building will include approximately 9,000 sq ft of open wet-lab, 3,000 sq ft vivarium, 3,000 sq ft clinical testing suite and a 2,000 sq ft clinical exercise training center. In addition, the hire will have access to the state-of-the-art core facilities at the University of Michigan, including the Cancer Center cores. We have an interest in candidates whose research program focuses on oncology and exercise, ranging from molecular and cellular research to lifestyle interventions that focus on physical activity/exercise. The successful candidate must have a doctoral degree, along with an outstanding record of performing cutting-edge research and producing high quality/high impact scientific publications. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a consistent and ongoing record of securing extramural research funding, mentorship of graduate students, and teaching courses on topics related to exercise and cancer. The successful candidate will also have experience and skill in providing leadership that will advance the scholarly excellence of the Movement Science Program or the Applied Exercise Science Program and the School of Kinesiology. |
